The African Scientific Institute introduces its new "Health Care Initiative". ASI has worked for more than 40 years to motivate our youth to pursue careers in science and technology, while simultaneously enhancing the development of our worldwide network of professional scientists and technologists. We are proud to announce that ASI now has more than 400 fellows from 30 countries.

ASI would like to expand its efforts and become more proactive in the global health and health care delivery arena. Information regarding the goals of the health care initiative is stated below.

We invite you to partner with us on one or more of the goals. We realize the value of your time; however, we need your advice and talents. We have enough brilliance and expertise in ASI to make a major impact on the world in the areas of medicine, science, and technology; however we can only accomplish this vision with unified effort. Please read the health care initiative and let me know if you would like to partner on a particular goal. There may be several individuals working on one goal.

We welcome any advice that you may offer. If you desire to take a leadership role and chair one of the goals please let me know.

Thank you in advance for your participation. Remember that united we can diminish the geographical boundaries and elicit positive change in the world. ASI is an international organization and we are ready to take the lead in the promotion of science, technology and medicine.

ASI Healthcare Initiative Presentation

Throughout Africa and the African Diaspora

An efficient healthcare delivery system is essential to survival of a nation. It can be compromised by conditions such as limited accessibility, cost inflation, and uneven quality. Every human being should be given the right to sustain themselves and their love ones. This basic right of citizen security is a necessary component that sustains a nation.

A healthy workforce is required for sustainable economic growth.

A global and mobile populace results in the further movement of communicable diseases that know no boundary. Diseases of the poor, whether domestic or international, will have effects on all of us.

Many countries are suffering because of the lack of physicians especially in the specialty areas. Some countries lack anesthesiologists, dentists or have a physician to patient ratio that is futile in terms of delivering efficient healthcare for a population of individuals.

Focus

ASI  believes  that health delivery professionals, students and the lay public should share in a system of providing the public with an excellent healthcare delivery system.

Students need to know about all facets of the healthcare industry from pharmaceutical, biotech,  medical supplies and equipment companies; urban, suburban and rural healthcare delivery; access to local, regional, national and international healthcare delivery networks.

Healthcare delivery professionals, whether associated with academic institutions, hospitals and clinics, or in private practice must network with each other more efficiently serve patients and to provide up to date preventive care knowledge to the public.

Clinical research must also be present to support the health care delivery systems and to assist in alleviating disease that a prevalent in communities. There must be a constant dialogue between physicians and scientists. These individuals will in turn communicate with government official and leaders.

Everyone needs to be part of the discussion that leads to policies affecting healthcare.

Domestic and international health disparities should be eliminated.

Program Goals

In order to assist in the development of efficient healthcare delivery systems ASI supports the following items listed below which will provide education and training for capacity building in targeted areas of research, medical education, and in the implementation and mobilization of health programs.

Goals

Recruit healthcare professionals who will train healthcare professionals in developing countries.

Recruit researchers (clinical or basic) who will establish collaborative partnerships with scientists in developing countries for the purpose of enhancing and expanding the clinical research infrastructure.

Recruit educators who will provide lectures and develop online education programs to support the delivery of medical education.

Establish telemedicine in developing countries.

Enhance the establishment of collaborative partnerships between institutions in Africa and institutions in other countries.

Partner with companies and agencies that support the acquisition of health care equipment, supplies and pharmaceutical products that will expand available resources to allow the best healthcare delivery. Building on existing local resources and insights can decrease reliance on donated and imported medical devices as well as stimulate the local infrastructure, economy and health system to ensure sustainability.

Provide international exchange programs for healthcare professionals and students.

Establish faculty development program to retain healthcare professionals and to promote career advancement.

Provide healthcare needs assessment and program/project evaluations.

Provide IT management assistance

Identify founding sources to assist in the establishment and success of the healthcare initiative program goals.

Human Resource

The program goals in the ASI Health Care Initiative will be accomplished through the consultation and efforts of medical physicians, scientist, engineers, technologists and educators who are fellows of ASI. These fellows will serve as consultants for various projects and programs. ASI  has worked for more than 40 years to motivate our youth to pursue careers in science and technology, while simultaneously enhancing the development of our worldwide network of professional scientists and technologists.  However, we would like to expand our efforts and become more proactive in science research and medicine.  This particular arena targets the healthcare delivery system. If you have an interest in partnering with ASI on one of the above goals please respond to this E-mail. There may be several individuals working on one component. The contribution of your talents and time will not only make a difference in the life of an individual but can influence the development of a country.  We have been blessed with so much talent and if we unite our minds and efforts we can make a difference in the world. We invite you to join us on this initiative. We also welcome any comments or suggestions.
