ASI AFRICAN RELIEF FUND
(managed by the African Scientific Institute)

From time to time, Africa faces catastrophe from drought, food shortages, and production deficiencies.  Whether severe drought occurs in the northern Sahel regions of Africa (Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal, Gambia, Chad, Mauritania, Cape Verde) or East Africa (in Somalia, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda) or southern Africa (Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi) . . . mass starvation results.  A wholistic analysis must be made to clarify problems in Africa and resources which are available to address them.  Are these problems caused by human negligence or ecological imbalances (natural or manmade) ?  Efficient food production must be initiated to provide nutritional foods to mass populations.  Simultaneously, alternative production methods for agricultural development must be studied which will not seriously impair longrange developing in Africa.  How much food is enough to serve the population in an African country during normal and emergency conditions?  How can the effects of drought be minimized while not imbalancing nature for long term progress?

Donating food, medical care, shelter, and clothing are all vital to helping those who are homeless and starving today. But what about tomorrow?  Engineering solutions alone are not enough.  Solutions relating to food production alone are not enough. Health care solutions alone are not enough.  To address these concerns and others which seriously impair Africa's ability to efficiently feed itself, the African Scientific Institute (ASI) has its AFRICAN RELIEF FUND division.  Donations to the FUND will be utilized to evaluate and provide alternative solutions to severe conditions in Africa.  These solutions will be initiated in phases which will benefit Africa for the years ahead during its normal periods and during the times of severe droughts.

Philosophy and Objectives

The AFRICAN RELIEF FUND believes an wholistic approach must be employed to effectively minimize crises in Africa.  Every discipline necessary must be harnessed and utilized in a coordinated manner to tackle crises so vast as drought, famine, and mass deaths in Africa.  As such, the AFRICAN RELIEF FUND:

(I) Evaluates and clearly states African conditions to the world, utilizing the Africa Scientific Institute's vast network of professional resources which include ecologists engineers, medical doctors and nurses, nutritionists, agricultural scientists, and any other person vital to solving blight conditions in Africa.

(2) Consults with politicians, theologians, and culturalists to assure solutions can be implemented and not adversely affect a particular country's plans or the directions of local communities within such a country.

(3) Coordinates with other organizations for effectiveness in mutual development areas and assist them where the FUND may have unique expertise.

(4) Acts as a linkage between worldwide academic institutions to assure that continual wholistic evaluations are maintained regarding African problem areas.

(5) Provides research teams to address continual food production in Africa.

(6) Researches and publishes information on Africa and its resources.

(7) Establishes international exchange programs to enhance Africa's agricultural systems.

(8) Establishes self-help programs for specific African regions, both in urban and rural areas.

(9) Monitors the programs of other organizations.
