Mr. Tommy E. Smith, P.E.
Mechanical Engineering

Tommy E. Smith, Jr. has worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory since 1980. A registered professional mechanical engineer, Mr. Smith has worked on a number of projects relating to national security and energy use and analysis. In particular, Tommy worked on two of the three architectures initially under consideration by the Strategic Defense Initiative of the. This work included work on optical instruments in support of the Brilliant Pebbles program; (high-velocity kinetic energy interceptors). He also worked on the Free Electron Laser program. A highlight of Smith’s work on this project is his receiving a patent on an electron energy spectrometer – a device developed to help determine the energy transfer between the drive laser and an undulating electron beam. Since 1994, Mr. Smith has turned his career focus on increasing the numbers of minority and female engineers and scientists by taking on the position of Director of Affirmative Action and Diversity at the Laboratory.
