She is Director of Education and Biomedical Research Development, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, NIH. She identifies the environmental health research and training needs of underserved populations, coordinates the Institute’s K-12 science education programs, chairs the NIEHS IRB and is a member of the NIH Human Subjects Research Advisory Committee. Her early research focused on the mechanism of simian virus 40 replication and conformation; and she later focused on the molecular basis of multi-drug resistance in breast cancer cells. She is Prof. Emeritus of Biology and Environmental Science, UDC and Adjunct Prof. at the School of Public Health, UNC-CH. She is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, life member of the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer, and a former member of the African American National Advisory Committee of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She is an elected member of Sigma Xi, has been elected to fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology and is a Fellow of the AAAS. Also, included in her honors are the Geraldine P. Woods Sciences Award and the 1999 ONI Award from the International Congress of Black Women, among others. She was awarded the 2003 Thurgood Marshall Alumni Award from the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund. |
