Dr. Lloyd N. Ferguson
Chemist, Professor Emeritus, author of 7 chemistry books

Is distinguished as a retired Professor Emeritus since 1986 from California State University at Los Angeles where he has been on its faculty since 1965 and served as Chairman of its Department of Chemistry during 1968-71. There is now a scholarship in his name at this institution. He has noteworthy accomplishments during his forty-plus years in chemistry. He taught chemistry at Howard University in Washington, DC for 20 years and served as head of its Dept. of Chemistry from 1958-65. Dr. Ferguson is an author of 50+ journal publications; he has written articles in Colliers encyclopedia and an Italian encyclopedia; he has also written seven chemistry textbooks. Not only is he a recipient of many awards and distinguished in several publishings, Dr. Ferguson has served the Black community well. He has provided assistance to minority youth in chemistry, as he participated in the formulation of the SEED program (Support for the Educationally and Economically Disadvantaged) of the American Chemical Society, but he is the most widely read Black author in chemistry. Of his seven chemistry textbooks, two has been translated into Hindi and Japanese. However, many readers of his books know that he is a Black author. A classic example occurred at the University of Mississippi. While it was keeping Blacks from entering the university, it was using Dr. Ferguson's book as a text.
