Dr. Randolph W. Bromery, Ph.D. Dr. Randolph W. Bromery is former Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He served with the all-black unit of the U.S. Army Air Corps, Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. After the war, he earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from Howard University. From 1948 to 1967, Dr. Bromery was employed as an airborne exploration geophysicist while earning master’s and doctoral degrees part-time and at night. In 1969, he accepted a faculty position at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He became department chair in 1969 and then moved up to Vice Chancellor for student affairs in 1970 and Chancellor in 1971 He recently completed nearly 55 years in higher education and government service, having previously served as president of Springfield College, Chancellor of the Board of Regents for Higher Education under Governors Dukakis and Weld, and as president of Westfield State College. He has been re-appointed by President Bush to a three-year term on the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science. He has honorary doctorates and eight others from around the world. He was named Outstanding Black Scientist by the National Academy of Sciences and received a Distinguished Service Award from the Geological Society of America of which he is a former President. |
