Dr. Gloria Long Anderson, Ph.D.
Chemist, Researcher

Chair Emeritus of the Chemistry Department in academia, Gloria Long Anderson taught, administered, fundraised, and conducted as much research as her limited financial support made possible. She earned her M.S. degree at Atlanta University in 1961 and her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the University of Chicago in 1968. Despite offers from scientifically well-equipped universities, she never went back on her 1968 pledge to stay in black schools. Dr. Anderson has performed extensive research in fluorine-19 chemistry and related areas of pharmaceutical development. Her research also included the study of amantadines, used in the prevention of viral infection. She also studied the use of propellants for rockets for the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research. In 1990 she became a research consultant for BioSPECS of The Hague, Netherlands. Dr. Anderson encourages students, as she herself was mentored by her own parents and teachers.
